Luke Combs Gives Bobby Bones 'Candid Advice' On Fatherhood

Luke Combs shared a word of advice to iHeartRadio’s Bobby Bones before he and his wife welcome Baby No. 1.

Combs joined Bobby Bones on a new episode of The BobbyCast, which premiered on Thursday (February 26). Their conversation arrives shortly after the The Way I Am artist and his wife, Nicole Combs, announced that they’d welcomed their third baby. So, Bobby asked Combs, “give me some advice. I’m about to have my first kid.”

“Just don’t — this is going to be so weird to say because it’s the absolute antithesis of what you should do — but just don’t worry about it, man,” Combs said. “You can’t really control it. It’s going to be chaos. It’s going to be a polar shift of your entire life. …You’re never ready. You’re not going to be ready. You’ll be ready when it happens because you’ll just have been — I mean, this is a stark comparison, but a soldier is never ready for war. And it’s not the same thing, obviously, but that’s the only metaphor I can come up with. You’re never ready to do that until you’re there, and then you’ve done it and you’re like, ‘oh, I guess I can do this because I kind of have to.’ And when you have the kid, it’s like, you gotta go. There’s no other choice. The kid can’t do anything for itself. Your baby can’t do anything for itself.

“I would say that my biggest piece of advice is the baby, the infant that comes out, does not need you in any way. Your wife needs you a lot, though,” Combs continued. “Your wife is going to be so tired. It’s going to be so exhausting because she’s going through the same thing you’re going through, but there’s also a physical element for her. Her body is going to be completely different after this thing, and it’s going to be like she’s never experienced that before and she’s going to be dealing with all these new emotions and you’re going to be going through all these things. So, helping her, helping her through it and everything to make her life as comfortable and easy as it can be through that process, to me, is the most benefit that you can be for the child because the child needs your wife. It does not need you. it needs you to help the wife so she can help the baby. Obviously, you’re going to hold it and feed it and be around. That’s obvious. But it really benefits from that relationship with her in those formative months, and she’s going to need a lot of support, man. she’s going to be really tired and stressed, and not getting enough sleep. and you’re not going to be getting good sleep. you just gotta be a team, dude. You can’t ever lash out at each other because it’s not you versus the baby, or versus your wife. this is the new team. The new team has three players on it now. And it’s like, how do we dish the ball to the new teammate? How do we get everybody involved? And that’s your role. You’re basically point guard. Don’t ever shoot. Just pass. …Just set everybody up for success, man.”

Combs and his wife announced last week that they’d welcomed Baby No. 3, son Chet Wiley Combs. Chet Wily joins big brothers Tex Lawrence Combs, who was born on Father’s Day in June 2022, and Beau Lee Combswho followed in August 2023

Bobby and his wife, Caitlin Estell, announced in September 2025 that they’re expecting Baby No. 1. Others with babies on the way in 2026 include Thomas Rhett, Parker McCollum, Dylan Marlowe (whose wife is pregnant with twins) and more. See the list of pregnancy announcements here.
